Another Year
04:40
|
|||
I turn another year older
and I'm still looking around
for adolescent romance
and a home not my home town
but with the comfort of a place that I've laid my head for years
I made a list of where I've been
who I've known and where they went
which growing pains have worked
which wisdom I still second guess
and how much time has passed since I've sincerely been in love
as my friends and I grow older
some slow down while some embolden
and in some ways it feels like leaving
and in others like coming home
and our issues haven't changed
just our roles and plans got rearranged
while the bright-light dreams we've sown
back down against the fear of ending up alone
should I slowly settle down
reshape the context of these dreams
for some nothing has changed
for others children have changed everything
as the politics of family move ahead against the politics of love
should I plan safely for the future
take advice or trust my heart
do they need to be at odds
is the journey really the important part
and I search myself within
but the answers only come in from above
as my friends and I grow older
some slow down while some embolden
and in some ways it feels like leaving
and in others like coming home
and our issues haven't changed
just our roles and plans got rearranged
while the bright-light dreams we've sown
back down against the fear of ending up alone
while the bright-light dreams we've sown
dissolve and catalyze the new dreams that have grown

The Losing Side
04:19
|
|||
I don't mind being told there's nowhere else for us to go
but I don't like being left to find out on my own
I've been patient, I've been a believer
I've been honest, I've stood the better ground
but who in their right mind waits forever
and who who's ever been equates love with leisure
and who on the losing side leaves with their pride
or saved face, an honest smile, ease or grace
perhaps I'll try hiding out so you might try checking in
but I don't like being left to hide out on my own
I've been patient, I've been a believer
I've been honest, I've stood the better ground
but who in their right mind waits forever
and who who's ever been equates love with leisure
and who on the losing side leaves with their pride
or saved face, an honest smile, ease or grace
I don't want to say I love someone
who can't say they're in love with me
I still hang on the clues you left me with as you fail to reappear
I've been patient, I've been a believer
I've been honest, I've stood the better ground
but who in their right mind waits forever
and who who's ever been equates love with leisure
and who on the losing side leaves with their pride
or saved face, an honest smile, ease or grace
no I don't like being left to find out on my own

as the brightest parade on earth breaks hearts I'm driving
silently down palm-treed streets
that the whole world knows by name
don't be surprised if it gets in your blood
and rips your small town childhood up
for there's no going back
with such pride in the act of going for broke
through the beautiful sinners
and dog-ugly winners
and average cogs in the machine
you smile at the show
even from the last row
'cause the windows are down and it's February
you can discuss the trends as you network for friends
or just go sit on the beach
as the faces you've watched all your life
do their workouts and their grocery shopping
and their history is advertised in the strangest of places
like the small dirty diners filled with clean sitcom faces
and they've all got a girl left behind
for this world of never-ending distraction
through the beautiful sinners
and dog-ugly winners
and average cogs in the machine
you smile at the show
even from the last row
cause the windows are down and it's February
you've got stories for home
you've graduated your poems
to a well-conceived piece of pop art
and though apocalypse looms
the flowers still bloom
and you grin because you're living the part
at heart

We Were Young Once
03:00
|
|||
we were young once
bold and fired
we splashed on the scene
and never tired
and all of our dreams were tightly held beliefs
and it seemed we'd always have them
and all of our trials and heartaches served to push and inspire
not weigh us down
yes were were the ones who would prove the world wrong
were were young once
and still are to many
though we've worn through some shoes
and filled out plenty
but growing up has sent us our own ways
though the old loyalties are still in place
but seldom exercised
due to time or some sense of pride
yes were were the ones who would prove the world wrong

Flags
04:07
|
|||
it invites, it insists
it fights for my surrender as my will fights to resist
but then the stars are kissed
and the whole world seems a sign
and all my words come shaped in poems of elementary rhyme
set to an endless sense of time
while all our flags put on parade
have sent their scents
and sensed the scents of others passing by this way
there are no mistakes
nature has got it all worked out
I knew you from a mile away
chemistry is just magic by another name
so here's your name mixed with my name
the maker sticks to what he knows
weaving the strings of forever with tomorrow never knows
from the throned stem of a rose
and the world marches in time
but in some mystery formation
blurred by the truth between the lines
and the sufferings that bind
while all our flags put on parade
have sent their scents
and sensed the scents of others passing by this way
there are no mistakes
nature has got it all worked out
I knew you from a mile away
chemistry is just magic by another name
so here's your name mixed with my name

The Aesthetics of Hope
04:58
|
|||
it's a hole to fall into
it's a love you can't crawl out of
it's a dream you've had for years
despite your common sense and your smartest fears
but it's a chance you'd jump and die for
sell your soul
stand in the rain
put your wiser eyes to sleep
cut a path but forget the way home
am I allowed to miss you when we've never been close
the timing is wrong but it fits
the aesthetics of hope and this loneliness mingle and twist
but this tryst is built from the air
so builder and buyer beware
there's a million ways to fall
and a million holes to fall in out there
it's the drug of dreams that might come true
better days with a better you
and images that don't grow old like childhood and rock and roll
my hopefulness repaints the rules
with your charity and your art-of-cool
and pieces from the times we miss
when friends and even strangers could fit like home
am I allowed to miss you when we've never been close
the timing is wrong but it fits
the aesthetics of hope and this loneliness mingle and twist
but this tryst is built from the air
so builder and buyer beware
there's a million ways to fall
and a million holes to fall in out there
oh and it occurs to me that half the time it isn't about you
as all our industry burns this hope to concern
as the smoke we're making, it just lingers here
smells like romance, intimate language, and funny mirrors
and the mood is raging but it's quiet
it puts a hole in your gut and a spark in your eye
am I allowed to miss you when we've never been close
the timing is wrong but it fits
the aesthetics of hope and this loneliness mingle and twist
but this tryst is built from the air
so builder and buyer beware
there's a million ways to fall

I Don't Like Waiting
05:03
|
|||
I don't like waiting for you to come around
though I must say
I don't mind my time
my other company
the lessons that come through while you're away
My cause is urgent
but my age has shown me
important happens slow
things go how they will go
and to respect the pull of fear and loyalty
and i've practiced all my ways
searched for ways around you
learned to read your words and silence
and you've mastered your ways too
from defense to follow-through
the difference between force and guidance
I don't like waiting for you to come around
though I'm scared for
when you do come home
how our first words will go
how to pack up our old lives and hit the road
and i've practiced all my ways
searched for ways around you
learned to read your words and silence
and you've mastered your ways too
from defense to followthrough
the difference between force and guidance
